Valentines day, the martini way

Feb 1, 2023

‘Amore’, something that’s in the DNA of us Italians. Maybe it’s the tactile and warm way we communicate to each other that spreads the love, be it romantically or among friends and family. To honour MARTINI’s Italian roots, we’ve compiled a carefully curated list of movies that are either set in our motherland, or centres around Italian characters. So grab your loved one and get ready for your movie night.

ROMEO AND JULIET

If there were ever the perfect, albeit heartbreaking, movie for Valentine’s day, it would be this. Set in the fair city of Verona, this adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic play depicts the unbreakable bond of love surviving through a myriad of chaos. Essential viewing. There’s also anumber of different versions to watch, from 1960’s version to the more recent Baz Luhrmann reimagining.

ROMAN HOLIDAY

If you can’t go to Italy, bring Italy to you with ‘Roman Holiday’, an equally heart-warming and hilarious romantic comedy about a princess who falls in love with a reporter during a trip to Rome. A classic rom-com that will make you feel good.

LA DOLCE VITA

Also set in Rome, ‘The Sweet Life’ is a critically acclaimed Italian film that portrays a disillusioned journalist in his journey of love as he tackles his own existential crisis. A story that is both touching and thought-provoking, it makes for a great flick to grab your hearts and minds this San Valentin.

THE ITALIAN JOB

Perhaps not your typical story of love for Valentine’s day, but an action packed heist movie that is guaranteed to get you jumping out the shared blanket, ‘The Italian Job’ follows a gangof thieves in their plot to steal millions from gangsters in Venice – the city of love. A classic movie that’s also had a more recent remake, but we’d suggest sticking with the original from 1969.

THE GODFATHER

Although a wildcard option, it would be ludicrous for us not to consider perhaps the most famous Italian classic ever, ‘The Godfather’. Depicting the journey of Sicilian immigrants in New York and their rise to power, it’s the perfect crime flick to keep you on the edge of the sofa this Valentine’s, and a perfect antidote if romance isn’t really your thing.

However, if the gritty mood of noir becomes all a bit too much for you, then why not lift the spirits with a sparkling MARTINI Sbagliato, a delicious twist to the famous Negroni cocktail – the perfect drink to top off an amazing Valentine’s.
